  • Time to Automate Fixed Assets

    In a recent survey, only 37% of the companies reported that they were using dedicated fixed asset software, such as Asset Keeper Pro. Almost 50% of them said their staff spends four to five days a month to maintain their fixed asset data in a spreadsheet or database. More than one third of them said they spend six to fifteen days maintaining their fixed asset data.

  • ACA Reporting compliance post 2016 Presidential election

    Now that Donald Trump has been elected President, how will this affect the Affordable Care Act's (ACA or sometimes known as “Obamacare”) employer mandates, reporting requirements, and penalty assessments?

    In the health care industry, this question has been asked more than any other after the election. So rather than guess what might happen, we should first address the question of what employers and health care professionals should do in the near term.

    The short answer is that the Affordable Care Act is still the law of the land and the election results have no effect on the current employer mandate, information reporting requirements, and whether penalties will be assessed for failure to comply. There have been a number of opinions expressed on what might happen; however, until ACA is repealed, replaced, defunded, or amended by new legislation, this is just conjecture on what the Congress and the President might do.   • Information Reports for the Affordable Care Act for 2016

    The due dates for information returns for 2016 are as follows:

    • Employee forms - January 31, 2017  Now Extended: March 2, 2017
    • IRS paper forms - February 28, 2017
    • IRS e-filed forms - March 31, 2017

    The IRS has already made it abundantly clear that there will be no extension of due dates as there was for the 2015 returns.

    In 2015, you have to offer coverage to 70% of your employees in order to avoid penalties. In 2016, you must offer coverage to 95% of your employees to avoid penalties.

  • Path Act of 2015 Extends Bonus Depreciation through 2019

    Bonus depreciation has been extended through 2019 based on the following applicable rates:

    • 2015 and 2017 - 50%
    • 2018 - 40%
    • 2019 - 30%
    • After 2019 - 0%

    In addition, qualified improvement property is defined in Sec. 168(k)(3) as improvements to the interior of any nonresidential real property placed in service after the date the building was first placed in service. In essence, this means that 39-year property can now qualify for bonus depreciation in 2016 and thereafter.
